Los Angeles is a destination that can be enjoyed at any time of the year with the lack of extreme seasonal weather. The winters are mild, and the summers don’t get as hot as many other parts of the country; depending on the activities you are looking to partake in, there are a few things to keep in mind when planning your trip. The two main factors to consider when planning your trip to LA are crowds and weather. These two things will have a big impact on virtually anything you do in the city, from driving to enjoying an amusement park.

No matter what time of year it is, Los Angeles is always a busy city. This comes as no shock with all of the attractions and exciting events happening all year all over the city. The first thing to take into consideration when planning a trip to the city of dreams is how many people will also be flocking to the coastal destination during that time. The summertime is peak season in LA. Not only is it more difficult to dodge traffic with so many extra cars packed into each highway, but ticket availability and wait times will be at a maximum during this time as well. Of course, there are certain events that only take place during a specific time of the year, so be sure to account for unexpected traffic buildup and lines. Waze is a great way to see real-time traffic and route the trip to your destination with the least traffic.

Even though Los Angeles can justly be expected to have consistent temperatures throughout the year, the summers can still get hot depending on the time of year and exactly where you are out and about. July, August and September are usually the hottest months of the year. On average, temperatures reach the mid-80s, but the summer of 2018 brought temperatures in upwards of 110-degrees! The closer you get to the valley and the further you are from the coast, the more these numbers will rise. There is always a chance of a major heatwave during the summer. The rest of the year brings pretty consistently desirable temperatures in the upper 60s and lower 70s. Just remember to bring a light jacket for that ocean breeze near the water and stay hydrated when the temperatures rise.

Amusement Parks

Some of the most popular attractions in the city are Disneyland, Universal Studios and Knotts Berry Farm, which means the crowds can get insane during the summer due to kids being out of school. Summer temperatures in addition to the large crowd can be a recipe for a headache of a trip and a very sweaty t-shirt. The best time to go to any amusement park with the least amount of people you’ll have to shoulder bump is a little tricky to figure out, but the best rule of thumb is to stay away from the park any time there is a national holiday. Any time school is in session is a good time to visit. If you are able to visit on a weekday during the school year, this will decrease your waiting times and the headache of dealing with a large crowd significantly. There is one downside to visiting during off-peak times: some of the rides are closed and the park has shorter hours. Make sure to check the website of any amusement park you will be visiting to make sure you have enough time to enjoy all of the attractions you are interested in.

As expected, the beaches are extremely crowded in the summer months and during holidays like Fourth of July, Memorial Day and Labor Day, but the summer months are the best time to be able to take a dip in the water. The up side to making a beach trip is that there are plenty of beaches to choose from and tons of space on each beach to set up your space. Traffic and parking are the difficult aspects of a beach trip, so make sure to research the closest parking lots, parking fees, and other modes of transportation.

Los Angeles is one of the few cities in the country where you will get roughly the same experience at any time of the year. The best rule of thumb is to aim at avoiding the summer months, but if that is the only time you can make a trip, keep the tips mentioned in mind to make your trip as smooth as possible. As long as you are prepared for the unexpected, nothing will get in your way of having a great time!
