We caught up with Wexler to talk pastrami, pizza and cocktails. Where would you have your last meal on earth? L’Ateleir de Joel Robuchon Paris. Where is a cool place to take an out-of-towner? The Venice Boardwalk, people think it’s grimy and full of weirdos, which it is but that’s what I love about it. I grew up going there every weekend with my dad. Name your favorite hole-in-the-wall place to grub? Sanam Luang Café in Thai town. Favorite Pizza? Its really hard to pick just one since there’s so many different styles in LA now. Best NY style: Vito’s on La Cienega. Best Neapolitan style: Bestia. Best I don’t know what style but it’s really good: Terroni. Favorite Deli? I grew up going to Langers and that used to be my favorite, but now that I’m opening my own deli that’s obviously taking the top spot. It was really important to us that we had the soul of a classic deli. We’re curing and smoking all of our meats, fish, mustard and pickles in house and slicing everything by hand. I want people to leave thinking it was the best fucking pastrami sandwich they’ve ever had, and then come back to have it again. Name one dish every Angeleno should try in their lifetime. Chicken Tana at Dan Tana’s. Where’s the best place to get a cup of coffee in LA? G&B. Favorite sushi spot? This place is actually really under the radar so I’m keeping it to myself. Favorite cocktail and where to snag it? Rainbow sherbet and champagne slush that my friend Noah Ellis of Red Medicine makes. It’s not on the menu but you can go in anytime and ask for it and they’ll be happy to make it. Favorite place to hear live music. Hollywood Bowl. What food trends can we look forward to this year? Pastrami. Name one food trend you would like to see disappear. Everyone hating on food trends. For the first time really in this country’s history people are into their food. People are cooking more at home and being more adventurous in restaurants. There’s a real drive to want to discover and celebrate food traditions and that’s a good thing. Name the most underrated neighborhood in LA. North Hollywood. That’s where I grew up and my parents still live there. There’s great ethnic restaurants, farmers markets and places to walk. Name three things every Angeleno should do this season in LA. Walk around Echo Park Lake. Take an ocean swim in January. Go to the outdoor concerts series by Grand Performances downtown.
