Michael???s entry into comedy was almost preordained. Years ago in a crowded Grand Rapids, Michigan movie theater, the projector malfunctioned. The film snapped, the house lights came on, and acting on a dare, young Michael jumped in front of the restless crowd and took center stage. When the theater manager tried to usher him out, the audience demanded he stay??? and Michael Jr. discovered his gift. Hailed as one of today???s most gifted comedians, Michael Jr. got his start when George Wallace took him to the legendary Comedy & Magic Club in Hermosa Beach. Even though the club is the home of Jay Leno and ???The Tonight Show??? staff, the club???s owner slipped the unknown comic onstage to perform. A week later, Michael Jr. was performing at the ???Just for Laughs??? comedy festival in Montreal where he became the first comedian to ever appear live via satellite on ???The Tonight Show.??? That performance catapulted Michael???s career. Now, Michael tours the country performing and can also be seen on TV regularly. Michael recently appeared in Sony Pictures' feature film War Room. His television appearances include The Tonight Show, The Late, Late Show, Oprah, Jimmy Kimmel Live Comedy Central, The Tom Joyner Show, The Bob and Tom Show TV One, Bryon Allen???s Comic Unleashed, BET???s ComicView, SiTV, CNN, DayBreak USA and ComedyTV. You???ll also find him at the most prestigious comedy clubs across the nation, including The Improv, The Laugh Factory, The Comedy Store, The Punchline, The Comic Strip, and Zanies Comedy Club. In addition, Michael also performs frequently in front of live audiences at colleges like Notre Dame, the University of Massachusetts, and the University of Alabama. Although Michael???s passion is comedy, he also has written a children???s book, The Parts We play. On the home front, Michael is happily married. He and his wife are the proud parents of five beautiful children.
Yacht Rock Favorites Ambrosia, Pablo Cruise & Peter Beckett LiveIt's going to be a super-chill night of smooth sounds at the Saban Theatre as a trio of yacht rock favorites take the stage for a night of music that will take you back to the 8-track days. Ambrosia's been cruising along for more than 40 years, reviving hits like "Biggest Part of Me" and playing to appreciative audiences around the globe. Pablo Cruise brings its funky twist on the California coast sound back to the stage with a string of hits like "Love Will Find a Way." And Peter Beckett of Player was the voice of that group's biggest hits, including the powerhouse song "Baby Come Back."
Ben Folds is widely regarded as one of the major music influencers of our generation. He???s spent over a decade sharing the stage with some of the world???s greatest symphony orchestras ??? from Sydney, Australia to the Kennedy Center, performing his pop hits and his critically acclaimed concerto for Piano and Orchestra. For five seasons he was a judge on the popular NBC series ???The Sing Off,??? which catapulted the art of a cappella into the national spotlight, and helped launch the careers of numerous a cappella groups. Throughout his career, Folds has created an enormous body of genre-bending musical art that includes pop albums as the front man for Ben Folds Five, multiple solo rock albums, as well as unique collaborative records with artists from Sara Bareilles and Regina Spektor, to Weird Al and William Shatner. His most recent album is a blend of pop and classical original works, in part recorded with the revered classical sextet yMusic that soared to #1 on both the Billboard classical and classical crossover charts. Beginning this Fall, Folds will be back to pound pianos again with cross country solo touring reminiscent of his earliest solo tours, where he defied skeptics by delivering a high energy rock performance using the intimacy of just a piano. In addition to his self-described love of performing and making music ???for humans,??? Folds is also an avid photographer, and is a member of the distinguished Sony Artisans of Imagery. Folds is also an advocate for music education and music therapy as a member of Artist Committee of the Americans For The Arts, and he serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Nashville Symphony.
100: The Apollo Theater Celebrates Ella's 100th Birthday!
Sep 24, 2017 | From $35.00
Presented in association with The Apollo Theater, Grammy-winning artist Patti Austin hosts an all-star evening celebrating Ella Fitzgerald’s 100th Birthday, part of The Apollo’s year-long celebration of this iconic jazz singer. The Apollo introduced Ella to the world in 1934, during the Harlem Renaissance, when she won the Amateur Nights at The Apollo contest at the age of 17, making her the first female performer to earn such a distinction. During her life-long career, she made her mark as one of the greatest scat singers in jazz history. She earned 14 Grammy Awards and collaborated with Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington, among many others. Patti Austin has been wowing audiences since her own childhood debut at the Apollo. In celebration of Ella’s centennial birthday, Patti and friends, including Monica Mancini and Ledisi, will pay tribute to the First Lady of Song. 100: The Apollo Theater Celebrates Ella’s 100th Birthday! is produced in collaboration with eight-time GRAMMY® –winning producer Gregg Field, who at the age of 24 toured as the drummer for Ella Fitzgerald. The Apollo kicked off Ella Fitzgerald’s centennial celebration with 100: The Apollo Celebrates Ella, October 22, 2016, also in collaboration with Mr. Field. “The Apollo Theater mounted one of the best centennial tribute concerts I’ve ever experienced … a well thought out show produced by drummer Gregg Field.” - The NY Observer Part of the IGNITE @ the FORD! series, made possible through the generous support of LA County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl. Proceeds benefit the Ford Theatre Foundation.
As suggested by its sleek op-art sleeve and future-shocked title, Interstellar, Rose's next album is as welcome as departures get: an icy blend of buffered beats, cascading chords and steely synths. Don't expect an electro album, however, more like what happens when an indie rock vet spends an extended period of time alongside a proper producer ??? Fischerspooner collaborator Le Chev. In other words, if Rose wanted synth lines pulled from the same Kraut-y cosmos as Vangelis and Klaus Schulze, a soundtrack-y slice of Enya or a bass line to sound like the Cure's Seventeen Seconds, it wasn't a question of "How?" so much as "When do you want to get started?" "It's been exciting finding out what's possible," says Rose. "If I can make something sound huge or epic, why wouldn't I?" Here's the deal then: aside from a fall tour with Dirty Beaches, Rose plans on putting 12-hour days in at the studio until her widescreen opus is completed for an early 2012 release. "Often this album is the scene in the film when the main character is reunited with his lost love, or perhaps like a visit to another planet," explains Rose. "I want every song to be like some kind of pop song cinematic adventure."
