When it comes to the LA music scene, Amoeba Music is an institution. The Hollywood outpost of the San Francisco-based independent music store opened on Sunset Boulevard in 2001 and immediately became a local landmark.
The neon red sign serves as beacon for music aficionados and pop culture fans, who are greeted with millions of new and used records, CDs, DVDs and collectibles once they step inside. It’s a world-famous destination where it’s not uncommon to see touring and local artists picking up new tunes before a local gig.
The store spans an entire city block, and in addition to the extensive selection of music, the two-story shop also hosts free in-store performances. While the times have shifted toward digital entertainment, and many songs and movies are easily downloaded, the thrill of the search and discovery is alive and well at Amoeba.
